Hopeless - 95 points

Title: Hopeless
Author: Colleen Hoover
Sometimes discovering the truth can leave you more hopeless than believing the lies…

That’s what seventeen-year-old Sky realizes after she meets Dean Holder. A guy with a reputation that rivals her own and an uncanny ability to invoke feelings in her she’s never had before. He terrifies her and captivates her all in the span of just one encounter, and something about the way he makes her feel sparks buried memories from a past that she wishes could just stay buried.

Sky struggles to keep him at a distance knowing he’s nothing but trouble, but Holder insists on learning everything about her. After finally caving to his unwavering pursuit, Sky soon finds that Holder isn’t at all who he’s been claiming to be. When the secrets he’s been keeping are finally revealed, every single facet of Sky’s life will change forever.

POINT BREAKDOWN

Plot: 47 points

One word: WOW!!! So, normally I don’t like books centered on people’s dark pasts, but this is my ONE exception (so far) to that! Wow, wow, wow!!! I don’t really want to give anything away, but lets just say I was blow away by the twists and surprises. Great going Hoover! This is a Dark Past book done right! Towards the end of the book the plot got a little depressing and awkward, but I’m only going to take 3 points away cause this book deserves a good rating!

Characters: 15 points

Sky, Dean, Six, and the rest of the characters were all well written, developed, and incorporated with one another. The way the relationship developed between Sky and Holder was the sweetest romance development in the history of books! Wouldn’t have changed anything about any of the characters at all. Nough said (PS: see pic of Holder below!)

Names of characters: 3 points

Sky is a mediocre name (her other name is better), Six is kind of a dumb name, and Dean is more of a grandpa name (although Holder is a pretty sexy name). So nothing fantastic about the main character names in the book, but they didn’t distract me from liking the book at all, only a 2 point deduction

Writing/Depth: 30 points

Every emotion was written absolutely perfectly. The whit and the humor had me rolling…literally, I could not stop laughing!!! The feeling of having a crush, being confused, being in “like” and being in “love”, being scared, being hurt, being disappointed, feeling betrayed…it’s all in here and you WILL feel it yourself! I kinda discounted the part just before the ending of the book, because it kind of took a trip south, and then back north again at the very end. But the rest of the book is so good that it’s worth skimming through the downer parts. One of the highest rated books on goodreads for a reason!

TOTAL: 95 POINTS
