Inspire (The Muse #1) - 83 points

Title: Inspire
Series Info: The Muse #1
Author: Cora Carmack

Kalliope lives with one purpose.

To inspire.

As an immortal muse, she doesn’t have any other choice. It’s part of how she was made. Musicians, artists, actors—they use her to advance their art, and she uses them to survive. She moves from one artist to the next, never staying long enough to get attached. But all she wants is a different life— a normal one. She’s spent thousands of years living lie after lie, and now she’s ready for something real.

Sweet, sexy, and steady, Wilder Bell feels more real than anything else in her long existence. And most importantly… he’s not an artist. He doesn’t want her for her ability. But she can’t turn off the way she influences people, not even to save a man she might love. Because in small doses, she can help make something beautiful, but her ability has just as much capacity to destroy as it does to create. The longer she stays, the more obsessed Wilder will become. It’s happened before, and it never turns out well for the mortal.

Her presence may inspire genius.

But it breeds madness, too.

POINT BREAKDOWN

Plot: 45 points

The plot of this book was very different from other Carmack books I have read. I believe it was her first paranormal book! And I have to say, the plot itself is very creative. I really like paranormal books, and I LOVE when they incorporated Greek mythology like this one did.

The whole 'muse' and 'inspiring' thing seemed kind of weird when I read the description of this book, and I almost didn't read it. But it was actually a very well written and imaginative plot theme. The way Kalli can 'give off' inspiration to people... and how strong and hard to manage her inspiration becomes when she tries to bottle it up. Very interesting concept! I loved it!

The only problem I had with this plot is that Kalli and Wilder move pretty fast. OK. SUPER fast... I generally have a hard time with books like that because it doesn't really keep you wanting more. The anticipation is gone within the first couple of chapters, and you don't have much to look forward to.

Still a great plot, and definitely worth the read!

Let's start with Kalli:
I like Kalli. She has a lot on her shoulders... her gift almost seems like a curse at times. She has a big job to do, and she has to do it just right or she will end up hurting either herself, or the people she inspires. So when she comes off as guarded and cautious, it's understandable. Especially when she meets Wilder. She's strikingly beautiful, and I love how Carmack gives her a more normal, curvy looking body, fitting the era she started in.

Speaking of Wilder...
This guy is obsessed. Like...over the top obsessed with Kalli to the point where he comes off hypersexual. I'll have to admit he's a little too intense for me in this book. It makes it hard to believe that he loves Kalli for Kalli and not for her ability. It seems like, rather he likes it or not, she is affecting him and pulling him in. He's all crazy obsessed with her and she is doing her best to be calm, cool, and collected all the time. Don't get me wrong, Kalli really likes him, too, but if you read the book you'll see what I mean.

Writing/Depth: 26 points

Again, Carmack did a great job with her first paranormal plot! And I always like Carmack's writing style in all her books.

One thing about this book is that she wrote it very dramatically. Everything that happens is very emotion filled and intense. Sometimes I was hoping for something lighter... a mental break from the intensity. A little more humor would have been nice (there wasn't much, if any, in this book).

But all in all, it was a great read and I finished it in about 2 days! I DID get hooked on it, mostly wondering what was gonna happen with Kalli and Wilder. And to be completely honest...there is a cliffhanger. Don't say I didn't warn you!

PS: Be aware for very explicit sexual language. Definitely New Adult/Adult content.
