Wide Awake - 87 points

Title: Wide Awake
Author: Shelly Crane
A girl.
A coma.
A life she can't remember.

When Emma Walker wakes up in the hospital with no knowledge of how she got there, she learns that she's been in a coma for six months. Strangers show up and claim to be her parents, but she can't remember them. She can't remember anyone. Not her friends, not even her boyfriend. Even though she can't remember, everyone wants her to just pick up where she left off, but what she learns about the 'old her' makes her start to wish she'd never woken up. Her boyfriend breaks up with the new girl he's dating to be with her, her parents want her to start planning for college, her friends want their leader back, and her physical therapist with the hazel eyes keeps his distance to save his position at the hospital.

Will she ever feel like she recognizes the girl in the mirror?

POINT BREAKDOWN

Plot: 40 points

What I loved:

1. A SECOND CHANCE: I thought the idea of having a second chance at life was an AMAZING plot. Definitely different from anything I've ever read! Not being able to remember your past would definitely suck in multiple ways, yet it turned out OK for Emma. I understand the feeling of wanting to start over, and that is something Emma got to do.

2. PHYSICAL THERAPY/MASON: Although I will save my review of Mason for the character section, the fact that he was a physical therapist was an amazing way for Mason and Emma to meet. And they way he helped her through her whole recovery was super endearing!

3. EMMA'S DECISION: Emma's decision to be someone new was a relief to me! I really didn't want her to try too hard to be the old Emma. If you read the book, you'll understand why!

Other parts:

1. RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPMENT: At first, the connection between Emma and Mason was blurry. I couldn't understand how Mason really felt about Emma and what his relationship with Adeline was like. Basically I couldn't understand where his hesitation was coming from. Then it became clear that he liked her but things weren't turning out well because of Emma's parents. Then they finally got close, but it seemed like they were constantly apologizing to each other. So the relationship was a tad bit shaky throughout the book, but luckily everything ended up OK :)

2. ANDY: I really wish there was a different outcome for him. I just wasn't satisfied with it. Everyone got a second chance to make things right but him.

3. EMMA/EMMIE: There were times in the book when Emma would say, "The old Emma is dead." And then there were times when she would get upset at the thought that she WASN'T the same girl, and would get upset when her parents would point out that she was different. She would try to say that she is still Emma, regardless of her changes after the accident. So I didn't understand how she really felt about herself. Did she want to be the same "Emmie", or did she want to abandon the old 'Emmie' and be 'Emma,' the new daughter?

Characters: 20 points

Emma: I honestly loved Emma! I loved the decisions she made throughout the book, and I loved her drive and motivation to be normal again and to keep moving forward. I also loved how she didn't give up on Mason, and that money and status didn't matter to her. Great personality traits!

Mason: Mason was a true gentleman throughout the whole book!!! He took care of his family, he obeyed Emma's parent's wishes, and he let Emma know who he really was and what he could and couldn't offer her. It seemed like he honestly wanted the best for Emma whatever that meant, and I really, really loved that about him!

Emma's Parents: I loved the way things turned out between Isabelle and Emma, but was a little disappointed that Rhett didn't warm up to the new Emma as much. But what I loved most about the parents was the way they were written, because I think any parent in that situation would have reacted pretty much the same way. They wanted the old kid back, but the also tried to accept the new. In the end, I think they really did want the best for Emma, too!

Writing/Depth: 27 points

This is an area that I think Crane really excels. The emotional depth was truly outstanding! I felt everything Mason and Emma were feeling! There were bits of humor in the book which I really loved, and 'attraction' scenes (that's what I'll call them) were very fun to read! Very steamy and yet very age appropriate :)
