Title: Stone Cold Touch
Series Info: The Dark Elements #2

Every touch has its price

Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who’s pretty sure things can’t get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.

But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla’s powers begin to evolve, and she’s offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden. Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay…

POINT BREAKDOWN

Plot: 50

I really loved the plot for this book because there were several twists and turns! Unexpected things happened left and right... all the way up to the very end (which was a huge shocker for me, I might add). JLA keeps you guessing and clueless the whole time!

Layla stops seeing auras for a bit, and I was trying to figure out why the whole time! When it's finally explained in the book, it was not something I would have ever thought about!

Then there's this whole dilemma about the Lilin... was it birthed or not? Is it Layla or someone else? I couldn't figure it out... and I tried. Believe me I did. Things just weren't adding up for me at all. Which was kinda cool because predictability isn't much fun!

Then Layla notices there is something she can do that she wasn't able to do before. Something special. VERY special. But something about her must have changed. What gave her this capability? I couldn't figure that one out either... But I have to say that she finds out the hard way what it is that gives her this ability, and it wasn't pretty. I was pretty close to having a panic attack... Like, seriously.

Anxious to find out what the heck I'm talking about??? Go read it. Now. You'll be glad you did!

I really enjoyed the surprises that came with this book, and I really can't wait until the sequel. Which comes out July of next year I believe??? COME ON JLA!!! LOL

Layla is pretty much the same as the first book. And she also reminds me of Alex in the Covenant Series. Kind, sweet, thoughtful, and full of emotions, yet quite the firecracker when she wants to be. She expresses all of her feelings down to her core with Roth. She doesn't hold back at all. With Zayne, however, she tries to hide EVERYTHING. She's embarrassed to say or do the wrong thing around him.

About Zayne and Roth... I wish I could tell you which one I like better. I really wish I could! We see a different side of Zayne in this book... a swoony side of Zayne. Before I was totally team Roth, and now... I really don't know! One thing I DON'T like about this tough love triangle is that she can't make up her mind... and really, she's got to love one more than the other. I've never heard of a girl being MADLY in love with two different people. There is a point in the book when I seriously want to scream at her, "What the heck are you doing??? You can't do that with him!!! You just seemed to commit to the other one!!!" It really upset me actually... it makes her seem a little desperate for attention. I'm taking a point off of her for that one LOL. Come on, girl!!!

I'll cut her some slack though since it IS a pretty hard choice LOL.

Zayne: Zayne is the more protective boy in the love triangle. He wants to watch after Layla 24/7 and keep her in a little box so she doesn't hurt herself or do something stupid. But honestly... I think that's good for her because she's pretty impulsive and finds herself in a lot of bad situations. And she also finds herself in a lot of trouble. Less so with Zayne than with Roth though.

Roth: Roth is less restricted with Layla and lets her be more adventurous and take some risks. He encourages it in fact. There are only a couple situations when he puts his foot down with her. And Layla likes that freedom... the whole box thing that Zayne and the rest of the wardens do is a little too much for her.

That's what makes the decision for her so hard... does she want a master protector - the one that cares for her well being above all else? Or the one that gives her freedom, but also puts her in risky situations? It's one of those Good Boy/Bad Boy decisions that is going to be hard for her to make.

Cayman: I'm adding him in my review cause he was pretty awesome in this book ;) He's a great friend to Roth! But Roth sends him to a witch and he makes a deal on Roth's behalf... meaning Roth is going to have to pay the price. We don't find out what that price is in this book though.. which pretty much sucks cause I doubt it's going to be good!

Writing/Depth: 30 points

As I mentioned earlier... JLA did a great job keeping the reader in suspense throughout the whole book, and her writing style was superb as always. Her balance of humor and sadness, love and hate, fear and happiness... all great! A nice mix of both.

And I honestly love what she does with Zayne in this book. We see a lot more of Roth in the other book, so I was already in love with him. Now I'm in love with Zayne, too!

Book three is going to be interesting... I can already feel the tension about to arise. A lot of bad stuff is gonna go down! And hopefully nothing too heartbreaking happens. I have a bad feeling about that one though...
