POINT BREAKDOWN

Plot: 50

I'm going to try very, very hard not to spoil the paranormal aspect of this book. Because in the abstract, McGuire doesn't really touch on all the paranormalness of her plot. Not all of it. And so.... I will try to save the mystery for you to read for yourself.

However... I must say that the plot was fantastic! I really enjoyed all of it. Was it predictable? Well yes and no. I had a inclination about what was going to happen, but many things still caught me by surprise. Which I loved!

All in all, the mix of paranormal and humanness in this book was very good and very well written! I would definitely recommend this book to people who like paranormal, young/new adult books. This book has plenty of cute, sweet romantic scenes without anything too graphic, so I would say it leans more towards the young adult audience.

Characters: 12 points

This is where I had some mixed emotions...

In general, all of the characters were OK. None of them were boring or mediocre, but there were some things that I did find disappointing about some of them.

Nina: First of all.. is it Neen-ah, or Nine-ah? I can't tell. At one point Beth calls her Neen-ah, but her nickname is Nigh. Like Night. So is it Nine-ah? Ugh... that frustrated me. Just....Ugh.

But what frustrated me most about Nina was that at certain parts of the book, she embarrasses herself several times over when Jared was around. Like, big time. Doing and saying things that made me think, "Really? REALLY??? Come on... have some respect for yourself!" Showing off your infatuation for someone you just met is pretty embarrassing to me. Maybe that's just me though.. IDK.

Also, she let Ryan get away with a heck of a lot. I would have started shutting him out from the beginning if I really was that obsessed with Jared, yet she seems like she wanted to keep that door open just in case or something. AND THEN she had the nerve to use Ryan to prove a point. Which was so, so sad. That made me want to smack Ryan, too. Again... where is the self-respect here? Ryan DEFINITELY had none at all.

Jared: OK.. I really liked Jared for the most part. And in all honesty, I liked Nina, too. But Jared moved way too fast with Nina... he even says so himself in the book. It kinda makes me wonder how much could be left in the other books left in the series. Sure... lots of action and suspense... and lots of romance. But little relationship progression is left. I'm sure the other books are going to be good, but I'm not sure I have the motivation to read them. McGuire is a great writer so I'm contemplating it, but I have a feeling I'll get bored fast.

I just wished there was more they could find out about each other... more relationship growth potential.

Claire: She was great. Awesome. Very rational in all areas when she needed to be, and she loves her brother a lot. It was super sweet! Maybe she had a bad mood at times, but with good reason. All of her emotions and moods made sense. If I do read the other books, I'll be looking forward to more of Claire!

Beth and Kim: Both good friends! Loved them!

Cynthia: There is something about Cynthia... either McGuire just didn't want to spend a lot of time talking about her, or there is something very, very suspicious about her. Something doesn't seem quite right about her in my opinion.

Ryan: No self-respect. Zero. All I can say.

Writing/Depth: 30 points

After reading, "Beautiful Disaster" by McGuire, I figured this book was probably worth the read. And I was right!!!

She is truly a fantastic writer... sometimes I read a book and the writing style is too plain, boring, or immature. But McGuire does a fantastic job of writing! There was even some good humor in this book. I LOLd a couple times...even while I was reading at 2:30am.

I would say her writing almost makes up for the lack of points in characters... but I don't like reviewing books like that.

Her scenes don't draw out, and for the most part, things get straight to the point. Which means you aren't sitting there thinking, "Get on with it already!" and you don't get confused about what's going on in a scene. You can follow along easily.

Great going McGuire!!! I've been impressed with all the books of yours I've read!

TOTAL: 92 POINTS!
