Storm (Elemental #1) - 96 points

TitleStorm
Series Info: Elemental #1
Author: Brigid Kemmerer

Becca Chandler is suddenly getting all the guys all the ones she doesn't want. Ever since her ex-boyfriend spread those lies about her. Then she saves Chris Merrick from a beating in the school parking lot. Chris is different. Way different: he can control water just like his brothers can control fire, wind, and earth. They're powerful. Dangerous. Marked for death.

And now that she knows the truth, so is Becca.

Secrets are hard to keep when your life's at stake. When Hunter, the mysterious new kid around school, turns up with a talent for being in the wrong place at the right time, Becca thinks she can trust him. But then Hunter goes head-to-head with Chris, and Becca wonders who's hiding the most dangerous truth of all.

The storm is coming.

POINT BREAKDOWN

Plot: 48 points

What a great, original plot! This book incorporates a paranormal theme that I have yet to see in any other book. I really enjoyed the whole elemental (air, fire, water, earth, and spirit) theme in the book, and I loved how certain characters each had more power with a specific element (or several elements...).

The crushing and swoonage in this book was also incredible, as was the love triangle going on. Chris and Becca clearly had a thing going on, but so did Hunter and Becca. I have to admit that I really adored the chemistry between Hunter and Becca and the cute scenes they had together. I have a feeling we'll see more of the Chris-Becca relationship in further books.

The only small downsides of this book for me were that I wish things didn't end the way they did between Hunter and Becca, and I wish we knew what happened to the Guide at the end of the book. Then again, it is a series and there is a lot more story to be told in future books!

Characters: 18 points

I just need to say right up front that I think Kemmerer did a fantastic job with the main characters!!! I really loved them all!

Becca: When you read a paranormal book, 9 out of 10 times the main female character has the same personality traits: Bravery, independence, courage, determination, charisma, humor, and a strong bond with the male character(s), as well as a need to protect them. Becca really fit your typical description, and that was fine with me! She didn't do anything overly stupid (which a lot of female characters typically do), and she wasn't pining over any of the boys per se (which I was happy about!). I really don't like it when the girl comes off as overly confident and tries to get the boy. Becca didn't do that! The only thing I didn't like about her is that she was pretty rude to her father. I can understand where her animosity comes from, but honestly, I don't think anyone would treat their father like that after not seeing them for years, regardless of why they left. It would be awkward, sure, but there was really no need for her to be so rude, in my opinion.

Chris: The thing about Chris is that I can tell he really started to care about Becca, but certain circumstances prevented him from being able to show her how much he cared about her, until she was in a life or death situation. But in those situations, I was swooned! Chris is totally adorable, even on the cover! Hunter got in his way a bit, so I'm anxious to see what will happen with Chris and Becca in the rest of the books. There is definitely something there!

Hunter: Hunter was sweet to the MAX! Honestly, the scenes he shared with Becca were all pretty amazing (minus the last 10% of the book). I admit...I got quite a few butterflies in my stomach whenever they were together. I really wonder how much he really cares about Becca and who will eventually get the girl...him or Chris. I can't imagine Hunter getting the girl at this point, but with the chemistry they shared in this book, it would be a shame for everything between them to end cold turkey. In regards to his appearance, I didn't like the whole facial-piercing thing, but I hardly even thought about it as I was reading the book because it wasn't brought up too many times.

Gabriel, Nick, and Michael: The brotherly bond between each of the brothers, including Chris, were all special and unique, and their joking around all the time made for a great, fun read! I really enjoyed each of them and their bond!

Writing/Depth: 30 points

Love, love, loved the writing style of this author!!! The humor was great, the depth of the scenes were great, the explanations of the elemental powers (while they were being felt and executed) were great, and the intimate (all pretty much G rated) scenes between Becca and Chris/Hunter were great as well! The ending kinda sucked, but only because there were some cliffhangers of sorts. The very, VERY end of the book (I'm talking the last page, last sentences) on the other hand, was fabulous!

I think Kemmerer definitely makes the list of one of my favorite authors :) Looking forward to reading the other Elemental books in the future!

TOTAL: 96 POINTS
